Saxon Road & Slack Cottages

History

Saxon Road

Before the 14th. Century there was nothing of real importance in the Hoddlesden Area except for two roads: -

a) The ROMAN ROAD built by Julius Agricola in AD 97. This linked the Roman Forts of Manchester and Ribchester.

b) The SAXON ROAD or "Limmers Gate" which was the main route from West Lancashire to the East of England. Named "Limmers Gate", as it was the route the packhorses took carrying lime etc. (It is known locally as "The Pack Horse Route".)

This Road enters the "Village Area" by Heys Lane off the Roman Road. From Chapman Road it goes by Stand Hill - Slack Cottages (ruins) and Langshaw Head to Long Hey Lane.

Slack Cottages

Slack cottages stood on the Saxon Road which can be clearly seen in this picture. The cottages were condemned in the 1950's because there were no services, electricity, gas or sanitation.
