What is the Green
In 1997, it was brought to the attention of the current Chair of the Hoddlesden Millennium Green Trust that a piece of disused land was available in the village on which a new village green could be formed. It took about two years to find out who owned the land and to gain permission to make the Green there. The villagers were consulted at every stage in the development of the Green and their ideas were included, these were:
1. Access for everybody
2. Leave the land as natural as possible
3. Include a wildflower meadow.
All these aims, and more, were achieved, and over the years the Green has remained a place of quiet enjoyment of nature. There were to be at least two annual celebrations, one in the summer (a Grand Picnic for the whole village and surrounding areas) and a Christmas celebration of Carols by Candlelight accompanied by Darwen 'B' Band.
These events, and the Green itself, have helped community spirit in the village and entries in the visitors book at the Annual Picnic prove that people still appreciate the Green and what it has to offer.
