Wildlife on the Green

Features

Birds

The Green attracts many different types of birds, some of which you may see in your garden, such as robins, blue tits & sparrows. You may be lucky enough to see some rarer species, if so please let us know!

Insects

We have a tremendous variety of insects which arise because of the diversity of habitats on the green. Particularly interesting is the 'Orange Tip' butterfly that can be seen in the summer.

Mammals

Some animals live on the green and some just visit. For example, we sometimes see wild deer and foxes. If you stand still and keep quiet you may be fortunate enough to see something very interesting. Mice & voles are in permanent residence.

Plants

Over twenty different species of plant grow on the green. The most important is the 'Bistort' which is rare in Great Britain but grows in our area. Our wildflower meadow boasts a profusion of native flowers in early summer. Remember that plants are living things and are easily damaged. Please keep to the paths and do not pick the flowers.

Trees

There are many varieties of native trees on the green. Including Alder in the wetter areas and Hazel in the drier parts. Other trees on site include Birch, Oak, Ash, Willow & Sycamore. These trees especially the Oak provide food, shelter and breeding grounds for many species of insects that then provide food for other creatures.
