Willow Dome & Clay Faces

Features

Willow Arbour

The Millennium Green Youth committee known as the GREENI's obtained funding to create the willow structure from the Lancashire Countryside Agency.

The living willow structure in the shape of a dome was choosen by the GREENI's and is their contribution to the nature trail.

Living willow is a joy and the structure was to provide an interesting and soothing learning environment for all to enjoy, with the aim of using it for storytelling and picnics.

The beauty of willow is it's adaptability. In our climate it will survive almost anywhere. It will tolerate some shade but grows better in bright sunshine & will grow on moist, sry fertile sites.

Clay Faces

In 2006 the Committee worked with a local artist called Jane Lim studying for her M.A. degree in Public Art at Bolton University. The artwork depicts the people leaving at the "End of Shift". In 1932 the pipeworks were thought to employ 350 people.

The idea from Jane was that the artwork represented the 350 faces of the workers. Two workshops were held for local people to make their own faces and the criteria for the artwork was to keep it as 'natural as possible.'

The aims & objectives for the project was:-

  • To create a sense of ownership via community involvement
  • The project was to focus on the people of Hoddlesden & the surrounds
  • To be educational, developing creative skills for all
